What does the term GM mean?
If you have spent any time on crypto or NFT related Twitter accounts, Discord servers, or Telegram channels, you have likely seen the letters “GM” tossed around. Some Discord servers have an entire GM channel where the only thing users post are the letters “gm”. So what does it all mean?
In short GM stands for Good Morning. However it is a bit more complex than that. The phrase has become the de facto greeting and byword among NFT and crypto communities. Saying “GM”, or gm’ing, can be done at any time of the day. Morning time has nothing to do with it. The letters may be typed as all upper or lower case, or as mixed case.
Often associated with the broader WAGMI (We’re All Gonna Make It) movement, using this phrase is a way to identify as community insider.
The exact origins for this phrase are unknown. However, the rise in popularity is often associated as a response to Raj Gokal’s, a Solana co-founder, Twitter suspension. Raj was known for greeting people with #gm on his Twitter account.
The term has sparked a slew of gifs, memes, and emojis. People will occasionally respond with a GM gif or meme instead of typing it out.
